Schauer played for South Milwaukee from 1951-54, earning all-Milwaukee Suburban Conference honors three times.  He finished his career with 1,545 points, including 549 as a senior.  He set a state tournament record with 56 rebounds and played in the North-South All-Star Classic in Murray, Kentucky.

Schauer averaged 9.5 points per game during the 1955-56 season.
