(15) Michigan 65 Marquette 79

MU 79, No. 15 Michigan 65

11_27_09_buycks.jpegLake Buena Vista, FL – The Marquette Golden Eagles will once again be playing for an early season tournament title.

Led by 52.8% shooting and 22 points and nine rebounds from Lazar Hayward, MU downed Michigan, 79-65, on Friday afternoon at Disney's Milk House, earning them a date in the championship game of the Old Spice Classic.

The Golden Eagles will face the winner of Alabama-Florida State at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Jimmy Butler added 17 points and nine rebounds, Darius Johnson-Odom 14 and Dwight Buycks 13 as MU withstood a 1-for-6 second half from beyond the arc by out-rebounding Michigan, 33-27, and outscoring the Wolverines, 42-32, in the paint.

MU (6-0), which led 48-37 early in the second half, withstood a 10-0 Michigan run that pulled the Wolverines to within 48-47 with 16 minutes remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles immediately answered with a 12-2 run, capped by a Jeronne Maymon layup off a Hayward pass, that gave them some breathing room at 60-49 with 11:34 left.

Michigan never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, and MU sealed the deal with 7-for-8 free-throw shooting in the final 2:42.

The Wolverines, who hit just 3 of 20 three-pointers, got 22 points from Manny Harris and 12 from Laval Lucas-Perry. They shot 45.5% overall for the game.

MU was the aggressor from the tip, looking on each possession to drive the lane rather than settle for long jump shots. The approach paid off, as four of the Golden Eagles first five baskets came on layups in opening an early 12-10 lead.

The Golden Eagles' long-range game also came online not long thereafter, and the Wolverines had no answer. With Johnson-Odom leading the way with a pair of threes, MU went on to score on eight consecutive possessions and 10 of 11 to open up a 33-21 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first half.

Michigan responded with a 10-3 run to pull within 36-31 at the 4:10 mark, but five straight points from Buycks stretched the Golden Eagles' lead back to 10. Michigan closed out the half with a pair of baskets sandwiched around a Maurice Acker three, and MU went into halftime with a 44-35 lead.

Johnson-Odom led the way with 12 points, knocking down 4 of 6 shots and 2 of 3 three-pointers, while Buycks, who earned a start alongside Johnson-Odom, added nine. Butler had eight and Hayward seven for the Golden Eagles, who shot 54.8% and knocked down 5 of 11 threes (45.5%).

Michigan trailed despite shooting 51.9%, Harris scored nine and DeShawn Sims eight.

MU Downs No. 15/15 Michigan 79-65 In Old Spice Classic Semifinals

ORLANDO, FL – Marquette turned team speed into an early-season upset.

Lazar Hayward scored 22 points and Jimmy Butler had 17 to lead Marquette past No. 15 Michigan 79-65 at the Old Spice Classic on Friday.

“That was as quick a team that I can recall,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “That's incredible quickness at all five positions.”

Darius Johnson-Odom added 14 points for Marquette (6-0), which will play in the tournament championship game Sunday.

“I thought we did a really good job of handling their changing defenses,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. “We had our hands full from the beginning.”

Marquette was 17 for 21 from the free throw line, while Michigan was 12 for 18.

Michigan (3-1) got 22 points and nine rebounds from Manny Harris.

Harris had seven points as Michigan opened the second half with a 12-4 spurt to cut its deficit to 48-47. But Hayward scored six points and Butler added four in a 10-0 run by Marquette that made it 58-47 with 12 minutes to play.

“They're an excellent passing team, and low turnover numbers,” Beilein said.

Hayward, who celebrated his 23rd birthday Thursday by scoring 27 points in Marquette's 71-61 victory against Xavier, gave the Golden Eagles a 70-57 lead on a putback with four minutes remaining.

“Hayward, obviously, is a great player,” Beilein said.

Johnson-Odom had 12 of his points in the first half as Marquette took a 44-35 lead.

Michigan was just 3 for 20 from 3-point range.

“They did a great job of contesting shots,” Wolverines forward DeShawn Sims said. “We just wasn't able to knock down any shots today. A credit to their defense; they did a great job defending us.”

Hayward has 1,361 points, which moves him into 18th place on the Marquette career list.
