Marquette 64 - Winthrop 71

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Winthrop used the 3-point shot and a domination on the boards Saturday to beat Marquette 71-64 at its own tournament for the first time since 1997.

Craig Bradshaw scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, while James Shuler added 15 points to lead Winthrop (2-0) to over Marquette (1-1) in the championship game of the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic.

Bradshaw, a 6-foot-10 junior, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

In all, Winthrop hit 11-of-27 3-point shots, including six 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes of the first half as it built a lead it would never lose. The Eagles also out-rebounded Marquette 39-21 and a grabbed 22 offensive rebounds.

Chris Gaynor added 12 points for Winthrop, which won its 20th straight regular season game. The last time Winthrop lost during the regular season was Jan. 5 when the Eagles were beaten by Coastal Carolina 76-68.

Steve Novak scored 17 points and Dominic James added 15 points and 7 assists to lead Marquette. The loss was first time Marquette coach Tom Crean has not won the tournament since he became head coach in 1999.

Winthrop used a 14-6 run midway through the second half to grab a 52-40 lead when Phillip Williams scored on a layin with 11:24 remaining. The Eagles hit three 3-pointers during the run.

Marquette was able to trim the lead to 66-61 when Ousmane Barro scored on a layup with 1:50 remaining.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to cut the lead further, but Wes Matthews missed hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 50 seconds remaining.

Gaynor hit two free throws with 33.3 seconds remaining to increase the lead to 68-61. Novak then hit a 3-pointer to make the score 68-64 with 24.9 seconds left.

Winthrop hit three free throws down the stretch to close out the win.

Winthrop used a barrage of 3-pointers to grab a 34-30 halftime lead. The last six shots hit by the Eagles in the half were 3-pointers, including two by Williams and two by Michael Jenkins.

In all, Winthrop hit 7-of-15 3-point shots in the first half and had 9 steals.

Marquette, which was led by Novak's 9 points, was out-rebounded 18-11 and had only 2 offensive rebounds in the first half. That includes one in the final seconds that led to Jerel McNeal hitting a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer.
